Wow. Reading this was like an episode of a soap opera, lol. My 2 cents is more like 5 dollars. :-)
I’ve been on here for a little of two years. I remember how delighted I was to come across this website. I’ve seen it go through a few makeovers, and mostly, they’ve been some great improvements. Some have not, but… as a person who designs websites, I know all too well how hard it can be to maintain the functionality of a website. Let alone, one that is half user-generated.
However, I can also say that even if it’s just a so-called hobby to you, it’s still a hobby that was made to include other people. A large amount of other people. With that comes having to deal with the people. The good and the bad. But really… an individual watching anime is a hobby. Providing a website that regularly updates in order for other people to watch anime, is a job. Maybe not a paid one, in this instance, but it’s still work.
The people coming here, are customers. Especially so long as you have ads on the site. Customers, will have opinions and if you want to keep them you’ll have to listen to them.
Jin, you contradict yourself. On one hand, you say people should understand that this site isn’t as much of a priority as people think it should be to you. Then you put out your other hand and say it’s your baby. It’s like scales trying to balance themselves out. But, I can relate since I feel the same way about a site of my own that I’m doing about everything on.
People tell me I should sell it if I don’t have the time to regularly update/maintain it, but then I’ve invested so much time, energy, and heart into it… how can I? The difference I can see between us from this thread is rather than get upset, I took in my readers’ complaints (some harsh) and considered their thoughts. Cause as it is, what’s the point of doing my site if my readers are unhappy?
In the few times I’ve directly dealt with you, Jin, you’ve conveyed yourself to have a bit of an attitude and a lack of tact when it comes to your responses. No, I don’t know you, not implying I do or that I would want to. But, I feel this whole thing could have been handled a lot more maturely. This is, indeed, a great site. It made me leave another site two years ago. I do miss the manga portion, but I still love the community aspect here that is lacking on so many other anime-watching sites. You’ve done a great job overall.
However, the slowness of episode updates and problems with profiles is very much something that will threaten good job. As well as the inability to enlarge video viewers because of the way they are embedded. I can admit that I, too, have begun to watch a number of series elsewhere. And, as I mentioned, what’s the point of doing it if the people are unhappy?
When you balance your scales out, things will work themselves put. But, it’s important to keep in mind that if you were doing this just for yourself - as you say a hobby - the site wouldn’t have come this far.
Best of luck!
